Probiotics

Probiotics

The probiotics module will look at 4 areas including

  • Gut microbes
  • Probiotic/fermented foods
  • Probiotic supplements
  • Vitamin K2

When I trained as a junior doctor, probiotics were not part of the curriculum. For many, it may seem that probiotics are the new kid on the block, however, our knowledge about probiotics is far from new.

I trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London (UK) – now part of Imperial College London. This was where Sir Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin.

We all know about antibiotics and that antibiotics kill germs. Louis Pasteur is known as the Father of Microbiology for his involvement in developing the ‘germ theory’, that microbes cause disease.

However, many do not know that Nobel Prize winner, Elie Metchnikoff who worked under Pasteur at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, is known as the Father of Probiotics. Metchnikoff did research looking at the causes of longevity – living a long life! He observed that Hungarian peasants lived long lives and this may be related to their daily consumption of sour milk.

It is known that the practical utilisation of science lags way behind research knowledge. Almost 100 years after Metchnikoff research, the scientific community is beginning to take note of this old news. The Human microbiome project which started in 2008 seeks to catalogue the microbes that live in a symbiotic relationship with us.

So important are gut microbes, that it is now possible to get a faecal matter transplant and scientific research has shown FMT to be useful in treating resistant diabetes. The Probiotic food module will look at the areas that you need to bring you up to date with your knowledge about the gut and probiotic foods.

Enjoy!
